What to dress your newborn in when leaving the hospital? ›

The best coming-home outfits for newborns are comfortable, soft and easy to put on and off. Ideally, they come with a hat or have features like built-in cuffs and booties to keep your newborn warm, especially during cold months.

Going Home Outfit

I keep it really simple. Usually, that's a pair of leggings, one of my favorite tank tops, and depending on the weather, I'll throw on one of my cardigans! A lot of what I wore during pregnancy (you can see my maternity must-haves here) is what I will wear postpartum.

Leaving the Hospital

Babies are often overdressed for the first trip home. Dress your baby as you would dress yourself. So, if you'd be too warm in a knitted hat during the summer, your baby probably will be, too. In warm weather, dress your baby in a T-shirt and light cotton pants or a baby blanket over bare legs.

All you need for the first few weeks are enough clothes to make sure your baby will be warm and clean. You'll probably need: 6 stretch suits (all-in-ones) for both day and night, or 4 stretch suits and 2 nightdresses (nighties) for the night – use socks or bootees with the nightie if it's cold.

Layers are crucial with newborns, as they struggle to regulate their own body temperature. Long-sleeved onesies and long-sleeve sleepwear are both good ideas. You can also match onesies with shirts. On average, it's best to have at least 14 newborn clothing options (two for each day of the week).

Aim for one outfit in newborn size and one 0-3 months. Don't forget hats and/or socks, if weather-appropriate, to keep baby warm. Your pediatrician's contact information. The doctors and nurses will ask you for this information several times, so it's good to have it handy.

Rompers and all-in-ones are so simple to take off if baby spits up or has an accident, whilst sleepsuits or t-shirts with enveloped necklines will help you protect their head whilst you get them dressed.
